MLD is probably the best known therapy for surgical recovery and many surgeons recommend it. It is an extremely gentle, medical massage technique, which can be used straight after surgery and at any stage of recovery. MLD is not painful, it is often very soothing and relaxing. While it feels very gentle, it is very powerful at stimulating the lymphatic system to drain away toxins and fluids from surgical sites. It also stimulates the immune system to lessen the risk of infection. It effectively reduces post-operative pain, discomfort, swelling, bruising & inflammation. MLD helps the body to clear anaesthetics, debris and waste products left from surgical procedures and all types of liposuction.
HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE RECOMMENDED?
MLD is beneficial for every type of surgery. Sessions should ideally start the day after the surgery or liposuction. Each case is different, as every person heals in a different way, but as a guide:
- Breast/ Male chest/ Upper arms; 1-3 x 1 hour sessions over 2 weeks
- Face/ Nose/ Neck; 3-5 x 1 hour sessions over 3 weeks
- Thighs/ Flanks/ Abdomen; 3-6 sessions over 2-3 weeks
- For Hi definition liposuction intensive, daily MLD is recommended for the first week, then 10 further sessions over 2-3 weeks.
Lymphatic kinesiotaping is a specialist taping technique, which works to stimulate & support your own lymphatic system. It is worn alongside your compression. Taping is often applied at the first post-op session, following MLD. It stays in place to deliver 24 hour lymphatic drainage and substantially reduces swelling & bruising. It lasts for about a week, often for much longer, if looked after. Taping also treats awkward areas where it is not practical to compress (breasts, face & neck etc.). It swiftly addresses complications such as haematomas and seromas and corrects issues caused by ill-fitting compression garments, such as pubic swelling.
Myofascial release eases pain and restores free movement all over the body by working in areas where tissues have become tightened. This can happen because of injury or surgery. It helps release problematic scar tissue, issues caused by adhesions and improves keloid & hypertrophic scars. Myofascial release is used a lot in reconstructive surgery and for burns.
Most surgeons recommend wearing compression garments for up to six weeks, initially for 24 hours a day, following most cosmetic procedures; especially for breast operations, tummy tucks and all liposuction. These garments are specifically designed to hold, support and shape your body into its new contours. They are worn to stop bleeding, control swelling and encourage skin and tissue healing. While some surgeons provide garments, others give little guidance on how to choose a garment or which ones to buy. It is so important for your compression garments to fit correctly and comfortably, so they can work properly. Many garments are badly sized and do not fit, leading to a number of unwanted reactions. Badly fitting or poor quality garments can cause additional pain, hardened tissues, skin pinching, contact dermatitis, inappropriate swelling (often of the breasts, underarm, legs, ankles and feet or in the pubic region) and uneven or lumpy results from liposuction.
To ensure your garments are perfect for your specific surgery, I offer a custom measuring, order & delivery service. I have a selection of garments for you to see and feel and I will talk you through the benefits of each. Because you will be wearing the garments continuously, it is recommended that you buy two for your recovery-one to wear, one in the wash.
